Schuyler went straight to her office on Monday morning, to drop her briefcase and hang up her coat. She tucked her boots discreetly behind the rack and put on the low-heeled shoes she wore for work. A lab coat was waiting for her and she put that on, slinging the stethoscope she'd carried in her briefcase around her neck.

The desk seemed well appointed and there were a few files in the in-box. Briefly she wondered if she should report to Dr. Jones first or read through the files. She was saved from that decision by a knock on her door.

“Good morning, Dr. Scorponi,” Cam smiled, “welcome to Midlands.”

“Thank you,” she nodded. “Are these my patients?” she asked, sweeping her hand across the files.

“No, they're mine,” he told her. “I wanted you to familiarize yourself with the cases. You'll be assisting me for now.”

“Assisting? But I thought ...”

“For now, Doctor. We need to learn to work together.”

This habit of interrupting was getting to be more annoying than the raised eyebrows, which, thank goodness, he hadn't done this time.

“Don't worry. You'll get your own cases soon enough,” he assured her.

A knock on the door had Cam inviting the person to enter. Could the man possibly get any more annoying? Really, inviting someone into her office.

“Ah, it's here,” Cam smiled, taking the plant from a middle-aged woman.

“For you, Dr. Scorponi. Just a little welcome present from me. Oh, and this is Winnie Blake, my good right hand, and for the time being, yours.”

Schuyler looked at the plant with something akin to horror. She could save human lives, but she'd never, ever been able to keep a plant alive.

“Th ... thank you,” she managed, taking the plant gingerly. Then inspiration hit.

“Why don't you keep it on your desk, Mrs. Blake? That way, everyone can enjoy it.”

By the amount of thriving greenery in and around the woman's desk, her plant had a much better chance of surviving than it did with her.

“Certainly, Doctor, and may I add my welcome? My extension is two-four-four if you need anything or have any questions.”

“Thank you, Mrs. Blake.” Schuyler's smile was more one of relief than friendliness, but no one needed to know that.

Winnie mentally shook her head. The doctor's reputation had preceded her. Most definitely one cold fish. Many times surgeons were cold and aloof, but certainly not Dr. Evans and not Dr. Jones, either. Both men had asked her to call them by their first names, although not in front of patients. She doubted if Dr. Scorponi would do the same.

Schuyler watched Mrs. Blake leave the room, unconsciously resting her fingers on the patient files.

“Anxious to get reading?” Cam smiled.

“Well, yes, and ...”

“But you'd also like to see your lab,” he said.

For once, Schuyler didn't mind his interrupting. She really didn't know what she wanted to do first.

“Tell you what. Why don't you show me your lab, then we'll go have coffee in the cafeteria and go over the files together.”

“But you must have appointments, rounds ...” Schuyler trailed off, vaguely waving her hand.
